Your dentist has special root forceps to extract roots. Other than that, cryers elevators are sharp ended tools that lift broken bits of root out of the socket. It doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary for a dentist. You might need a stitch afterwards, but otherwise routine. You wont need to be put to sleep to do this, normal run of the mill Local Anaesthetic will work fine for you. If you have sound teeth either side of this broken tooth, then yes, you might be able to have a bridge.x
