Do you need traktor pro to have a scratch dj setup?

Do you need traktor pro or other software to have a scratch dj setup or can you just have a jack lead out the laptop into a mixer and then have a turntable on the other side. so you play music with itunes on the laptop the it goes into a mixer with a cross fader with is also connected to a scratch turntable to scratch along with music from the laptop. would this work ????
